- 999 (24K) — 99.9% pure gold. Pinaka-malambot, easy yung magkamot/madeform. Best for investment-grade pieces. Hindi ito pang araw-araw na souwit.
- 916 (22K) — 91.6% gold + alloy (silver/copper). Pinaka-popular sa SG at sa Indian community. Strong enough for daily wear pero may significant gold value pa rin. Eto ang sinusuotang in-out — ang go-to ng karamihan.
- 750 (18K) — 75% gold. Mas makulay (kasi mas maraming alloy). Mas durable. Less gold value per gram.
- Below 750 — for fashion / costume jewellery. Hindi ito gold investment.
Para sa kababayan na bumibili as savings: 916 ang sweet spot. Wearable, has real gold value, retains worth at resale.
1.2 Verified destinations sa SG
Mustafa Centre (Little India) — pinaka-popular sa kababayan and Indian community. Open 24 hours. Has a dedicated jewellery floor. Per Mustafa Jewellery's site, they carry both 916 and 999. Strengths: large selection, competitive prices on plain pieces, transparent karat marking.
Other major Singapore jewellers: Soo Kee, Goldheart, Lee Hwa, Tomei, Lukfook, SK Jewellery. These are mall-tenant chains in Orchard, Bedok, Tampines, JEM, etc. Higher design premiums but consistent service.
Lucky Plaza Filipino-owned shops — some Filipino retailers do carry gold pieces. Mas personal ang transaction; pero ALWAYS verify karat, weight, at purchase receipt before paying.
1.3 The price you actually pay
Ang gold price ay quoted per gram and changes daily based on the global spot price (USD per troy ounce) and SGD exchange rate. Tignan ang live rate sa livepriceofgold.com/mustafa-gold-price bago ka pumunta sa store.
Ang final price mo ay:
- Spot price × weight in grams × purity factor (e.g., 0.916 for 916 gold)
- PLUS workmanship charge / making charge — yung "design fee", typically 5–15% on top.
- PLUS GST (9%) kung walang GST waiver.
Critical questions to ask before buying:
1. "What is the karat? Show me the marking." Real 916 gold is stamped "916" or "22K". 999 stamped "999" or "24K". No marking = walk away.
2. "What is the per-gram rate today?" Compare with the live rate online. Mas malayo ang quoted rate, mas malaki ang markup.
3. "What is the making charge?" Plain bangles have lower charges than detailed designs. Negotiate this — it's where the most flexibility lies.
4. "Buyback policy?" Important para sa investment buyers. Most jewellers buy back at spot rate minus a small spread. Mustafa is known for fairer buyback rates compared to mall jewellers.
1.4 Tips na hindi sinasabi sa shop
- Plain bangles, chains, and bars hold value better than fancy designs. Yung intricate na puwit-puwit na disenyo, the workmanship cost is locked in but won't be paid back when you sell or pawn.
- Buy receipts. Keep receipts. Without proof of purchase + weight + purity, your resale price drops.
- Compare 3-4 places before buying anything significant. Walk Mustafa first to set a baseline, then compare with mall jewellers.
- Avoid "investment gold" sales pitches that promise guaranteed returns. Gold IS an investment, but it's a long-term store of value, not a get-rich scheme.
Part 2 — Paano i-pawn ng tama
2.1 Pawning vs selling — different transactions
Pawning = collateralized loan. You give the pawnshop your gold, they give you cash + a pawn ticket. You have ~6 months to pay back the loan + interest. Get your gold back.
Selling = outright sale. They buy your gold, you walk away with cash. No return.
Importante ito: maraming kababayan na nag-pawn ang tinitiis ang pagiging "loan" status because they want their gold back later. May iba na nag-decide na talagang nagbenta — both are valid.
2.2 The big three pawn chains in SG
Per Singapore's Pawnbrokers Act, all licensed pawnbrokers operate under the same legal framework:
- ValueMax — largest chain, multiple locations, strong online presence. valuemax.com.sg
- MoneyMax — strong heartlands presence, also offers buyback. moneymax.com.sg
- Maxi-Cash — Pawn House Singapore brand. maxi-cash.com
Lahat regulated. Lahat nag-o-operate sa same rules. Ang difference ay sa valuation generosity, location convenience, at customer service. Common practice: get quotes from all three before pawning anything significant.
2.3 Interest rate at loan terms
Per the Pawnbrokers Act 2015:
- Maximum interest: 1.5% per month on the principal loan amount.
- Loan term: up to 6 months, after which you can renew or redeem.
- Loan amount: typically 60–80% of the pawnshop's assessed market value of your gold.
Computation example (per DollarsAndSense):
If your 22K bracelet weighs 20 grams and the pawn shop values it at S$60/g (after their margin), the assessed value = S$1,200. They'll likely offer S$720–960 as a loan (60–80% of assessed value).
