If you work near Marina Bay, plan your commute now
Many of us clock in around the bay: hotels along Raffles Avenue, restaurants inside Marina Bay Sands, malls at Suntec and Millenia Walk, shops in Raffles City.
The Land Transport Authority closes roads around the Marina Bay Street Circuit for several days before the race and keeps them shut until soon after it ends.
LTA releases the exact dates and times closer to race weekend. Watch its notices in late September instead of trusting last year's map.
Three moves save you stress:
Switch to the MRT for race week. City Hall, Esplanade, Promenade, Bayfront and Raffles Place sit within walking distance of the circuit edge, and trains keep running when roads close.
Add buffer time. Bus routes near the bay divert during closures, so a twenty-minute ride in September can double on race weekend.
Ask about your roster early. Hospitality and retail around the bay staff up hard for F1, and managers decide shifts, hours and transport weeks ahead.
The extra shifts are real money, if the terms are fair
F1 weekend ranks among the busiest of the year for Singapore's service floor. Restaurants extend hours, hotels run full, and event contractors hire short-term crew for the circuit, the hospitality suites and the concerts around the race.
If you pick up extra work, know what you agree to. Your employer should pay overtime past your normal hours at the rate the law sets for eligible workers.
An offer to work a public holiday or swap a rest day should come with the pay or time off your contract and MOM rules provide. Get the hours and the rate in writing before you say yes.

Work Permit and S Pass holders: you can work only for your named employer. A friend paying you cash to help at a race-weekend booth counts as illegal work and puts your pass at risk.
If the shift does not run through your own employer or a licensed arrangement, walk away.
You do not need a ticket to feel the race
Grandstand seats cost a fortune, but the city gives plenty away for free.
The engines carry. Stand along the Marina Bay waterfront promenade, near the Helix Bridge, or on the open decks around the Esplanade, and you hear the cars tear past even when a wall blocks the view.
Local free-to-air channels have carried the race in recent years. A rest day at home with kababayans, some pancit and the broadcast on makes its own front-row seat.
