Your Employer Can Now Cancel Your Work Permit in Minutes. What Happens Next
From 20 July, cancellation on the myMOM Portal takes effect the same day instead of up to three. Your Special Pass, your transfer and your final pay all move on that new clock.
Your Work Permit can end on a Tuesday morning and you would not know until your phone buzzes. From 20 July 2026, that gap got shorter. MOM moved Work Permit cancellation onto the myMOM Portal, and the outcome now appears the moment your employer completes the form.
Under the old process on WP Online, a cancellation that needed supporting documents could sit for up to three days before approval. Cancellations without documents took about 30 minutes. Now both land at once, with an acknowledgement letter emailed to your employer.
For most kababayan on a Work Permit, whether you clean a home in Bukit Timah or pour concrete in Tuas, this changes the pace of a week that already moves fast.
What lands on you the same day
MOM grants a Special Pass when your Work Permit cancellation goes through. The purpose is repatriation: it gives you time to settle your affairs and travel home.
A Special Pass is not a work pass. It lets you remain in Singapore for a defined purpose. It does not let you take a new job while you hold it. Working during that window puts your record with MOM at risk, and your record follows you into every future application.
If you need more time here, your employer submits a Special Pass extension on the same portal. That request sits with them, not with you, which is why the conversation about your departure date belongs in the same week as the cancellation, not after it.
Check your own status instead of waiting to be told
Download the SGWorkPass app if you have not. It reads your pass status from MOM records, not from your employer's word. After any conversation about ending your job, open it and see what the system says.
Two things worth doing within 24 hours of a cancellation.
Photograph your in-principle approval letter, your work permit card, your payslips for the last six months, and your employment contract. Once you leave, chasing paperwork from Manila costs weeks.
Add up what you are owed. Salary to your last day, unused annual leave, and any deduction you dispute. The Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management handles salary claims, and the Migrant Workers' Centre runs a 24-hour helpline on 6536 2692. Raise a claim while you are still in Singapore.
Transfers now sit in the same portal
Changing employers without going home requires your current employer to consent. That step used to arrive by email or SMS and get handled on WP Online. From 20 July it lives inside myMOM Portal alongside the cancellation.
One system means fewer excuses about a lost notification. If a prospective employer tells you the transfer is stuck on consent, you can ask your current employer to open the portal and check.
Do not pay anyone for a transfer. Charging a worker a placement or transfer fee beyond the regulated limit breaks Singapore law, and MOM has been auditing this through 2026.
For helpers, the timing is tighter
A domestic worker's housing ends with the job. When a permit gets cancelled in the morning, the question of where you sleep tonight becomes real by evening.
Know two numbers before you need them. The MOM helpline for migrant domestic workers is 1800 339 5505. The Centre for Domestic Employees runs a 24-hour line at 1800 225 5233 and can arrange temporary shelter.
Tell one person outside the household where you are, every time your situation changes. A friend who knows your employer's address and your permit number can act when you cannot.
The one step to take this week
Open SGWorkPass, then screenshot your current pass status and expiry. Save it to your phone gallery and send a copy to yourself on Messenger.
That screenshot costs you thirty seconds today. If a cancellation lands and the story about your last working day changes, it becomes the record you hold, and nobody else can edit it.
