The visa question, settled
If you hold a Philippine passport, you do not need a visa for a JB day trip. Malaysia lets Filipinos in visa-free for up to 30 days, so the visa line on your budget is zero. The one thing you must not skip is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, a free online form you fill in within three days before you cross. No printout is required, but do it before you leave — the counter can turn you back without it.
How to cross, cheapest to comfiest
The public bus is the budget king at roughly S$2.50 each way, but the Woodlands queue on a Saturday can eat your morning. Causeway Link is a flat S$4.80 a ride by card (S$4.75 on ManjaLink) — CW1 from Kranji, CW2 from Queen Street runs around the clock, and CW5 from Newton — and the KTM Shuttle Tebrau train is about S$5 out; the train takes five minutes but sells out, so book ahead. Cross-border taxis are the pricey option now — since the 2026 scheme launched, a private taxi or Grab starts around S$80 to S$100 per car each way, so it only makes sense split four ways, or shared from the terminal at about S$20 a head. If you drive, remember the VEP tag is now required to enter Malaysia, on top of toll, fuel, and JB parking.
Why the ringgit does the heavy lifting
The whole appeal is the exchange rate. With one Singapore dollar buying a bit over three ringgit, a RM40 foot massage lands near S$13, and a mani-pedi that would cost you S$50 in Lucky Plaza is a fraction of that across the Causeway. The calculator keeps your JB spending in ringgit — what you actually pay — and converts the total back to SGD so you can see the real damage. Update the rate to whatever your card or money changer gives you that week.
Before you go
Carry some ringgit cash for hawker stalls and small salons that do not take cards, but tap your card where you can for a better rate. Coming back, mind your GST relief limit on anything you buy. And leave a buffer for the jam: the checkpoint can swallow an hour each way on peak days, which is its own kind of cost.
