Crossing to JB on a Filipino Passport: 2026 Checklist for a Smooth Day Out

The short answer. Filipinos need no visa for a JB day trip, but you must fill in Malaysia's free Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days before you cross. The part that can hurt you is coming back: Singapore lets you in only on a valid pass, and work pass holders get no GST relief on what they buy.

This guide is for kababayans who live and work in Singapore, and for family visiting on a short-term pass. Tick the lists off the night before.

Who needs what

The Malaysian High Commission in Singapore lists only Singapore citizens (plus diplomats and a few border-pass holders) as exempt from the MDAC. A Singapore work pass does not exempt you.

Checklist: the night before

• Fill in the MDAC on the official Malaysian site. It is free and must be done within 3 days before you arrive.
• Check your pass card has not expired and that your employer has not cancelled it.
• PRs: check your Re-Entry Permit is valid on the day you come back.
• Check your passport has room and is the same one you last used to enter Singapore (this matters for the QR code below).
• Make your MyICA QR code at home, while you have good signal.
• Book the KTM Shuttle Tebrau now if you want the train. Seats sell out weeks ahead.
• Drivers: check your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tag and fill the tank to at least three-quarters.

Checklist: what to bring

• Passport (Malaysia always wants the real passport)
• Singapore pass card (Work Permit, S Pass, EP, DP, LTVP) or Re-Entry Permit
• Phone with the MDAC confirmation and the MyICA app
• Card for the bus fare (EZ-Link or a contactless bank card)
• Receipts for anything expensive you plan to bring back

The MDAC: do it yourself, for free

Malaysia has required the MDAC since 1 January 2024. You fill it in within 3 days before arrival on the official site.

Never pay an "agent" or a lookalike website for it. The official form costs nothing. If a page asks for your bank card, close it.

Getting there

Bus fares come from a Seth Lui guide (2026) and the train fare from Wise's KTM guide, as no official fare table loaded. Bus drivers do not wait for you at the checkpoints, so keep your ticket or card and follow the crowd to the same bus number on the other side.

Coming soon: the RTS Link train between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar in JB. Its operator expects passenger service to start in February 2027, according to Bernama (2 Oct 2026). Fares have not been announced.

At the Singapore checkpoint: the MyICA QR code

At Woodlands and Tuas, you can show a QR code from the MyICA app in place of your passport when you travel by car, motorcycle, lorry or bus, ICA says. This covers citizens, PRs, long-term pass holders and visitors.

Two groups must show their passport instead:

• first-time visitors to Singapore
• anyone using a passport they have not used to enter Singapore before (a renewed passport, for example)

After that first trip, the QR code works. Malaysia still checks your physical passport, so carry it either way.

Coming back into Singapore

This is the step that can cost you your job or your PR.

• Work Permit, S Pass, EP: your pass must be valid and not cancelled. Employers cancel passes on the myMOM Portal, and cancellation takes effect the same day. Read our guide to same-day work permit cancellation.
• PRs: your Re-Entry Permit must be valid on the day you come back, not just the day you left. Check it on ICA's Re-Entry Permit page.
• Family on a visit pass: the officer sets the number of days when they first land. A JB trip does not reset the clock.

What you can bring back (Singapore Customs rules)

That last row catches many kababayans. If you live here on a pass, Singapore Customs expects you to declare and pay GST on goods bought in JB. The full table is on the Singapore Customs duty-free page.

Checklist: before you head home

• Pass card and passport in your bag, not in the car boot
• MyICA QR code ready (if you have used this passport in Singapore before)
• No alcohol or cigarettes, or ready to declare and pay
• Receipts ready for anything you need to declare
• Expect long queues on Sundays and public holidays, and plan your trip home with time to spare

Driving

Singapore-registered cars must leave Singapore with the fuel tank at least three-quarters full. ICA turns back cars that fail the check, and drivers can be fined.

Malaysia requires foreign cars to carry a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag registered with JPJ, Malaysia's road transport department. Check JPJ's VEP portal for current rules before your first drive.

FAQs

Do Filipinos need a visa for Johor Bahru?

No visa is needed for a short visit. Travel sources list visa-free stays of up to 30 days for Philippine passports; check Malaysia's immigration site before a longer stay. You still must fill in the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before you cross.

Do I need the MDAC if I have a Singapore work pass?

Yes. The Malaysian High Commission in Singapore lists Singapore citizens, diplomats and a few border-pass holders as the only exempt groups. A Filipino on a Work Permit, S Pass or Employment Pass files the card. It is free on the official imigresen-online site.

Can I use the MyICA QR code instead of my passport?

At Woodlands and Tuas, yes, if you travel by car, motorcycle, lorry or bus and have entered Singapore on that passport before. First-time visitors and anyone on a new passport must show the passport. Malaysia still needs your physical passport.

Can I bring alcohol and cigarettes back from JB?

Not duty-free. Singapore Customs gives no liquor relief to anyone arriving from Malaysia, and cigarettes and tobacco never get an allowance. Declare them at the red channel and pay the duty and GST.

Do work pass holders get the S$100 GST relief?

No. Singapore Customs says holders of a Work Permit, Employment Pass, Dependant's Pass, Student Pass or Long-Term Pass issued by Singapore are not eligible for GST import relief. Declare goods bought in JB and pay the GST.

When does the RTS Link open?

Its operator expects passenger service in February 2027, with tests and trial runs due to finish by 31 December 2026, according to Bernama on 2 October 2026. Fares and the exact date will be announced jointly by Malaysia and Singapore.
