While most of Singapore marks the 61st National Day with a rooftop view and a cold drink, Jeanette Camilo Cariso is marking it with her legs. Over this National Day weekend she is running 61 kilometres, one for every year since independence, a salute from a Filipina to the country she now calls home.
Sixty-one kilometres is longer than a marathon and then some. A full marathon runs 42.195km. Jeanette is stacking almost another 19km on top, the kind of distance that turns a run into an all-day act of will.
She finished
She did it. Jeanette completed the full 61km on Saturday, 8 August, and crossed her own line past 10pm. Her Strava route would not record the whole distance, but the kilometres were real, run and walked over nine hours in the open heat.
She started at 1pm, straight into the worst of the afternoon sun, and the first four hours nearly broke her. "I was dying at the first 4hrs because I started 1pm which is very hot weather," she told FIS. No rain came to break it, not even for five minutes. So she went back to her plan: walk when the running stops making sense. From 15.75km to 26km she walked, then eased into a slow run. For the last 2.5km, from the yellow tower at Area C near Parkland Green to the cyclists' park at Area D where she started, she walked it home.
Sit with that for a second. Sixty-one kilometres in that air, the tracker glitching, the sun refusing to quit, and she still brought it home on her own two feet.
Why 61
The number is the whole point. Singapore turns 61 this year, and the SG61 celebrations fill the island all weekend. Jeanette took that number and made it personal. One kilometre for each year, run through the heat and the hours, her way of saying salamat to a place that has given work, safety, and a life to so many of us.
Plenty of us send that gratitude home in a padala or a phone call. She is spelling it out on the pavement, step after step, where anyone can see it.

She moved her attempt into Saturday daytime, so the hard middle lands in the afternoon sun. Anyone who has trained in Singapore knows what that means. The humidity does not care about your pace. Finishing 61km in that air asks for more than fitness. It asks for the kind of tigas ng ulo that gets a lot of us through a double shift.
The quiet strength kababayans carry
It fits that a Filipina is running this salute. So many of us do the long, unglamorous distance every day, on wards and worksites, in kitchens and homes across the island. We show up, we hold the line, we finish what we start. Jeanette put that same spirit into a single run and pointed it at the flag.
