Ship your balikbayan box from S'pore by mid-October or it misses Christmas

Send your balikbayan box from Singapore by mid-October so it reaches home in time for Christmas.

Sea cargo to the Philippines takes about four to ten weeks door to door, and the December backlog stretches it further. Count back from 24 December and the deadline lands now.

Boxes bound for the Visayas and Mindanao travel past Manila, so ship those first. Wait until November and you pay for air freight or hope the box clears in time.

Cost and timing

From Singapore, a small box starts around S$80 to S$100 with the usual forwarders. Bigger sizes cost more, and the price moves little whether the box is full or half empty.

Air freight lands in about a week but costs many times more. It makes no sense for a box of groceries.

Your forwarder's Christmas cut-off is the one that binds you, so ask for it before you pack.

Duty-free limits

The Bureau of Customs lets a Qualified Filipino While Abroad send balikbayan boxes free of duty and tax. That covers OFWs on a work contract, non-resident Filipinos, and Filipinos abroad on student or other temporary passes.

The limit is ₱150,000 in total value per sender per calendar year, across up to three shipments, under Customs Administrative Order 01-2018.

Boxes worth ₱10,000 or less count as de minimis and do not use up one of your three, so a small pasalubong box does not cost you a Christmas slot.

You must send to a relative up to the fourth civil degree by blood or marriage. Parents, siblings, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and first cousins all count.

What to pack

Customs allows personal and household goods, never commercial quantity. Clothes, canned goods, chocolates, shoes, toiletries and a phone for your mother pass through.

Customs seizes anything over these limits:

Twenty bottles of the same perfume reads as goods for sale, not gifts.

Keep out firearms, ammunition, drugs, and regulated goods without the right permit. Pack vitamins or medicine in personal amounts, and expect questions on anything unusual.

Paperwork

Every tax-free box needs an Information Sheet, which doubles as your packing list. Your forwarder gives you one, or you download it from customs.gov.ph.

List what is inside, put a fair value on it, and attach a photocopy of your passport bio page.

Do not undervalue the box or write "assorted" and hope. Customs treats a box found to differ from its declaration as misdeclared, and misdeclared shipments face seizure.

A ₱40,000 box with an honest declaration clears faster than the same box dressed up as ₱8,000. Use a DTI-accredited forwarder, as customs advises, and keep your receipt.

Photograph the packed box and the receipt before it leaves the counter, so you can trace it if it goes quiet.
